Michael Leven, president and chief operating officer for Las Vegas Sands, will be retiring from a long and distinguished career in the hospitality industry at the end of 2014. Through the years he has won countless awards and honors for his dedication and leadership, including the Asian American Hotel Owners Association Above and Beyond Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in the last year alone. We are proud to announce that he will have one more award to add to that list. The Penn State Hotel & Restaurant Society (PSHRS) has named Michael Leven the 2014 Hospitality Executive of the Year. In addition to this prestigious honor, Mr. Leven will also be inducted into the Penn State Hospitality Hall of Fame.
“Mr. Leven’s career accomplishments from leading major industry players, creating his own hotel company, co-founding AAHOA, and serving on countless boards are unparalleled,” said Lea Ann Kish, president of PSHRS and chief operating officer of Milestone Hospitality Management. “He is an icon, one of the most notable of our era, and a preeminent representation of the myriad of opportunities available to our past and present hospitality students.”
From food donations to bake sale items, over 900 Team Members from all across Marina Bay Sands came together in support of our 2014 World Hunger Day activities, resulting in our most successful campaign to date.
During the period of 26-30 May 2014, our drop-off boxes were filled with food donations from the Canned Food Drop Off drive – with a whopping 27 boxes full of food donations going to Food from the Heart, a non-profit organization that channels food donations to low-income families.
Our Clean Plate Challenge proved successful raising $1,580 for charity. By making sure we finished the food on our plates from our Team Dining Rooms (TDR), Marina Bay Sands donated $1 for every clean plate returned.
The cherry on the cake (literally!) was the huge success of the Bake Sale, where we got to sample the amazing confections from budding pâtissiers from all over the company! Through the concerted effort of bakers and buyers, we raised $13,162 for Food from the Heart, exceeding last years’ fundraiser.
These activities have been successful thanks to our Team Members. Their passion for philanthropy and dedication to a good cause has helped people in need.

Ever wonder what the largest company by revenue is in your state? Well, wonder no more! Broadview Networks, an information technology company, pulled data maintained by the business research firm Hoover’s to determine the largest company in each of the 50 states. If you happen to live in the Silver State, you might find a familiar name on this list. We are proud to say that Las Vegas Sands is the largest company in Nevada, with revenue of $13.76 billion!
We may be based in Nevada, however we take pride in being the world’s largest integrated resort company. Our financial success allows us the resources to make a difference in the communities we operate in all around the world including our recent $1 million donation to the global hygiene organization Clean the World, employee volunteer programs through the Boys and Girls Club in Pennsylvania, partnerships with WECARE Community Services in Singapore, and volunteer projects at the Macao Youth Volunteer Association in China, to name a few. We are honored to represent the great state of Nevada on this exclusive list. To read the article and see the full list, click here.

Las Vegas Sands team members building hygiene kits at Clean the World
Today, Las Vegas Sands was privileged to be a part of an amazing advancement of Clean The World, which unveiled new equipment at its Las Vegas facility that will help the non-profit organization double its production of recycled soaps.
The new equipment is made possible by our recent $1 million donation through our corporate citizenship initiative, Sands Cares, and will allow Clean The World to enhance their distribution efforts to people in need here in Las Vegas and around the globe. Three local charities, Shade Tree, Las Vegas Rescue Mission and Three Square, will receive thousands of hygiene kits to be built by LVS team members for distribution to locals in need.
Now that the equipment is up and running, it is time to put it into action! We have set a goal of building 100,000 disaster relief kits to help those in need in Las Vegas and across the U.S. You can help us meet our goal by volunteering for our upcoming community kit builds.
Details of this event will be shared in the coming weeks; in the meantime be sure to subscribe to Sands Confidential to stay up to date with all of our Sands Cares news.
Las Vegas Sands is proud to add another phenomenal achievement in sustainable practices to our list of “green” accomplishments. The prestigious Newsweek Green Rankings has named LVS one of the most environmental companies in the world. We now hold the #18 spot on the U.S. 500 list and the #28 spot on the Global 500 list. These achievements make Las Vegas Sands the highest ranked consumer services company in the country and number two in the world.
The Green Rankings comprehensively assess the environmental performance of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States and around the world. The rankings are based on eight key performance indicators; Energy Productivity, Greenhouse Gas Productivity, Water Productivity, Waste Productivity, Reputation, Sustainability Pay Link, Sustainability Board Committee, and Audited Environmental Metrics.
Through our global sustainability program, Sands ECO360°, LVS focuses on meeting the environmental objectives in the four fundamental areas; green buildings, environmentally responsible operations, green meetings, and stakeholder engagement. Our efforts have been recognized by independent organizations around the globe, including the International Organization for Standardization, EarthCheck and the Building and Construction Authority.
Las Vegas Sands takes our responsibility to environmentally-friendly operations seriously and are proud to receive such tremendous recognition for our efforts. To read more about Newsweek’s Green Rankings, click here.
We are proud to announce that Las Vegas Sands’ very own Biar Atem has been included in Fortune’s Heroes of the 500 list. Fortune found more than 50 people who have performed extraordinary acts of bravery, charity, ingenuity, or selflessness- transforming their communities in the process.
Biar was one of the thousands of “Lost Boys” from the South Sudan who were forced to abandon their homes when war threatened their very lives. After spending more than 14 years in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, Biar found a home in the United States. He ended up in Las Vegas in 2001 and took a job as a janitor at The Venetian. Since then, he has made the most of his new life by earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting as well as an MBA and is currently an auditor for Las Vegas Sands. Biar’s personal success, however, did not prevent him from remembering where he came from. He recently established the nonprofit South Sudan Center of America in order to assist the South Sudanese community through dialogue, education, and youth-focused programs that promote knowledge, hope and compassion.

Las Vegas Sands is proud to announce that two of our properties in Asia, Marina Bay Sands and The Venetian Macao, have become the first integrated resorts in the region to receive the prestigious ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System certification. ISO 20121 is developed by International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the world’s largest developer of voluntary international standards. The standard provides meeting venues and event planners a framework of policies, procedures and processes that have been designed to address the management of environmental, economic and social sustainability issues throughout an event cycle. The teams at Marina Bay Sands and Venetian Macao know how important sustainable practices are to their clients. They have gone above and beyond in their efforts to meet their clients’ needs and this ISO certification validates those efforts. Kudos to Marina Bay Sands and The Venetian Macao on a job well done!
The Sands for Singapore first quarterly volunteerism activity for 2014 was another success with overwhelming support coming from Team Members. During five days in February, over 330 volunteers came together at two locations to prepare food for the needy.
Up before sunrise, eager and compassionate Team Members cooked and packed food in the Willing Hearts soup kitchen amidst chatter and laughter. Another group of volunteers were on our property packing cookies for the festive season.
It was great to see Team Members taking the opportunity to connect with each other while doing their part for charity.
Giving back to the communities where we work and live is something that is very close to our hearts at Marina Bay Sands, and it has been a particularly amazing 2014 so far.
There is something incredibly special about superheroes and how they influence us. They inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves by helping others. It is extremely important to us to help our community while still having a good time with family, friends and colleagues.
What better way to inspire kids than to have them get up close and personal with the cast of The Amazing Spider-man 2! In March, six lucky students from the Metta School got a once-in-a-lifetime experience to attend an intimate meet-and-greet with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx. The six young fans were thrilled to meet their favorite superheroes in real life.

Just last week, Sands for Singapore and Sony Pictures invited more than 300 local special needs students to a screening of the blockbuster film. This was our way of enabling more local underserved communities to enjoy the best of global entertainment, and it was a truly heartwarming experience to see the smiles on the kids’ faces.
